"Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart" Psalm 37:4
This blog may be one of my shortest because God has made this scripture very clear to me. I know I have mentioned Psalm 37:4 in previous blogs, but recently He has opened up a new meaning for this verse.
I have always thought that this verse meant that if you follow the Lord, praise Him, give Him the glory and have joy in the Lord that he will give you the desires of your heart. Well I was having coffee with a dear friend last night and this verse came up again as we discussed some desires that were on both of our hearts for the future. I decided to tell her how God had done a 180 on the meaning of that verse.
When the Psalmist says "Delight yourself in the Lord", God has put on my heart for that to mean that we need to delight ourselves in God's will for us. That we need to delight ourselves in His perfect plan and perfect timing for us. Meaning that we need align our desires with His desires. We can only do that by praying to Him and, instead of asking Him for what our heart desires, ask Him to align our desires with His desires. Align our heart with His heart. Align His plan with what we desire in our lives.
Once we have prayed for God to align our desires with His desires for us, then the second part of the verse comes to life, "And He will give you the desires of your heart". Once our desires line up with His then we will see more of His perfect plan unfold for us. It's like giving up your list. Giving up the list for your life in every way. Giving your whole list over to Him and asking Him to show you bits and pieces of what He has in store for you whenever He is ready.
I had an experience this week and the only way to explain it is that it is a miracle of God and that's His hands were so evident in this that it blows my mind. As most of you know I have been fighting the University of Houston for my transcripts for over a year. I have been wanting to go for my Masters and my teaching certification and this tie up has truly halted my life. I have prayed to God to move mountains and whenever He was ready to release them to me it would happen. I had been feeling truly stuck lately. Not being able to move forward in my career and wanting a new direction if it was in His plan for me. Well God showed His power.
After emailing the University last week I received a response Tuesday afternoon. I called and spoke to a sweet woman who told me that my transcript was to be released for the next 24 hours! As I was on the phone with her I asked if I was able to come by the school to pick up a couple copies. She replied YES! What is even more amazing is I was on my way home and I pass by UH every day and was 3 exits from the school when I received the news. I exited, walked in and then walked out with 2 certified copies!
How amazing is that??? I saw God's plan in all of this finally. It took almost 2 years for this to happen. I prayed for so long for Him to release my transcripts to me so I could move on, but once I changed my prayer and prayed for His timing and His will and asking Him to please move mountains in His time... He MOVED! He moved in a HUGE way! When you align your desires and dreams with His desires and dreams, that obedience can show how God moves mountains.
This morning I asked a friend what his interpretation of Psalm 37:4 was, this was his response:
"I think it's where we cross the line from worldly and selfish desires, to a life of pure Christ, His purpose and pure peace and joy in Him."
I love this answer. Crossing the line from "worldly and selfish desires" and moving into a life of living for what God has in store for our lives and having "pure peace and joy in Him" and in His plan for us.
My question for you today is, are you delighting yourself in God's plan for your life? I can tell you honestly that I had not been for the longest time. I had been wanting my desires and for God to align His desires with mine. It is truly the other way around. We must align ours with His. That is my encouragement for you today. Pray to Him and pray to align your desires with His. His desires and His plan are far more amazing than anything we could ever dream of or desire for ourselves. Praying for you my sweet friends.
In Him and for His Glory!
P.S. I'm about to start a book called "Desire: The Journey We Must Take To Find the Life God Offers" by John Eldridge. I will do a follow up to this blog about what I learn and what God reveals to me. Until then...
