Tebow vs Manning... Not So Much

My normal blogging typically consists of my views on a certain verse and how God has impacted my life through His word. Well... today is a little different.

As most people know, I am a huge sports fan. I love sports, specific teams and certain players on that team. One of my favorite all-time sports players is Peyton Manning. He has been an amazing role model inside and outside the NFL. As most people know, one of my other favorite NFL players is Tim Tebow. He has no fear in sharing the Gospel with the world and I believe that shows who he is and is the same off and on the field. Unfortunately these two players battled for the starting position with the Denver Broncos and Manning won in a way. Manning chose the Broncos. Now, I have NOTHING against Peyton. If anyone were to ask me what player I admire for his sports ability and for his character, one of my top 3 wold be Peyton. I do not hate him, I am just confused and scared by his current actions. For those that have been under a rock, Peyton Manning has had 4 neck surgeries recently. It took him out of play last season and the Colts realized they cannot depend on one player to lead a team. My feeling was he needed to retire after the surgeries. He needed to hang up his cleats and know that he played the best that he could play and did it clean and with dignity. I did not expect him to go from the Colts to another team and want to continue playing. I would feel the same if it was another one of my favorite players. As most know, I am a die hard Yankees fan and a huge Derek Jeter fan. Derek is one of the four pillars of the Yankees golden generation. He is known and loved my Yankees fans for the way he plays, his dedication to his team and who he is off the field. If DJ had gone through 4 neck surgeries and then wanted to continue playing, even if, heaven forbid, for another team I would be just as disappointed and confused as I am with Manning. I have nothing against him. I fear for him when he takes a few really good hits and sacks.

What aggravates me is not the fact that Manning went to Denver, he could have gone to San Francisco and I would still be confused, what aggravates me is how Tebow is being treated during this time.

Tim Tebow is a quarterback for the NFL and worked his butt off to get there. His style may be different, he may throw the football like a dying duck sometimes and he makes me freak out when he runs the ball, but his style works. He was drafted in the first round which surprised millions, not me of course.
Tebow is first and foremost a man of God. He speaks of his faith whenever he gets the ability to and does not fear what others think about him. He is a man who has not and will not let the fame of the NFL get to him. He still remembers where he came from. A little known fact about Tebow, unless you have read his book, is for every game he invites a underprivileged or sick child and their family to join him for that weekend. He flies them to whatever city he is in, puts them up in a hotel, meals included, and spends time with that child before the game. He cares about those lives and finds them to be heros in his life. He comes from a strong family with strong beliefs and he carries those everyday. He prays for a heart like David. In a fallen world and as a fallen man, he prays for God's grace and love and thanks Him for his abilities and life everyday. He is what every man should strive to be and is a role model for many.

So please stop giving Manning and Tebow such a hard time. Both are going through significant changes in their lives. They do not need negative words and ridicule, they need our prayers and support.

In Him,

Cassie
