Consuming Fire
"Be careful not to forget the covenant of the Lord your God that He made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God." Deuteronomy 4:23-24
Our God is a jealous God. He wants you to Himself and does not want to share your mind, body, heart, or soul with anything or anyone. So why do we let the things of this world consume us instead of Him? Why do we let the negative or positive things take residence in our minds and hearts instead of God? It is easier said than done to not let the world consume us, to not let it take over our days and our thoughts When we let it, we loose touch with the One we should always be in touch with. We loose the rest we can find in Him and we loose the comfort we have in who He is to us. Why do we let this happen? Well, we are fallen humans that live in a fallen world, with objects that tend to look and feel for appeasing than God does at times. Objects that can seem beautiful and pure in nature can distract us from Him.
In Romans 12:2, Paul says, "Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." Paul is telling us to let God transform our hearts and minds. God wants us to conform to His way and not let the world conform us into what it wants us to be. What He wants for our lives, the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God, is beyond what we could ever imagine, but we have to first follow Him and let Him change us from the inside out. We have to first put out the fire that has been consuming us so we can burn like a wild fire for Him.
Over the past year I have let wanting to be pregnant and be a mom consume me. This desire has consumed my thoughts, my words, my conversations, my heart, my mind, my wallet, my prayers, and the words I have written. Most days I feel God has chosen for me to suffer and that I will always feel the way I am feeling and live the way i am living. Do you feel that way too? Do you feel as though God has left you in your struggle and that He wants to see what you will do while you are waiting? The pain can be unbearable, the fear can be debilitating, the waiting can be exhausting, and the unknown can be crippling, but we serve a Mighty God. We serve a God that gave Sarah Issac in Genesis 21:23. We serve a God that gave Manoah's wife Samson in Judges 13. We serve a God that gave Rebekah Jacob and Esau in Genesis 25:21. We serve a God that gave Rachel Joseph in Genesis 30:22-23. We serve a God that gave Hannah Samuel in 1 Samuel 1:20. We serve a God that gave Elizabeth John the Baptist. We serve a mighty, loving, compassionate, beautiful, jealous, and worthy of our praise and worship God! We serve the God of miracles!
We each have something that we struggle to let go of. We all have something that consumes us and distracts us from God's plan and will for our lives. It causes us to ignore His words, His warnings, and His touches in our lives. We want to give it to God because we know He can handle it, but we don't because we fear what He will do with it. Will I have a baby if I give it over to God? I do not know and that is a scary answer. Will God heal you if you give it over to Him? I do not know and that is a scary answer. What I do know is that God performs miracles everyday. He heals barren women everyday. He heals all types of infertility everyday. He brings sweet babies into this world everyday through women who were once told they would never bear children. He restores marriages after heartache and agony. He brings his sons and daughters back to Him after they have lost their way for no matter how long it has been. He heals relationships that were once thought to be lost. He is our God and He preforms miracles daily!
God loves you my sweet sister, more than you could ever imagine and He wants all of you. What are you letting consume you? What in your life is God jealous of? I know you are struggling, I know you are in pain, I know you are confused and feel alone in a crowded room. Know that I am praying for you as we walk this journey with God together.
